Types of Machining CentersTypes of Machining Centers - There are two main types of machining centers: 1. Vertical spindle 2. Horizontal spindle Both vertical and horizontal spindle machining centers are available in single or multiple spindle configurations. Also available are machining centers with both vertical and horizontal spindles or adjustable spindles that can be rotated into either horizontal or vertical positions. Vertical spindle machining centers are used in those cases where downward force is important for the machining process. The vertical spindle machining center is well suited in producing flat or box shaped workpieces. Horizontal spindle machining centers are used for machining multiple sided workpieces. In addition to, vertical and horizontal machining centers, there are universal machining center. These hybrid centers have the following characteristics:
1.Horizontal and vertical spindles with automatic switching capability from one to the other 2. Tool changer for the horizontal spindle 3. Tool changer for the vertical spindle 4. Pallet changer Used in conjunction with an FMC or an FMS, machining centers can enhance (the productivity and versatility of manufacturing plant. As progress toward wider use of flexible manufacturing techniques is made, machining centers will play an increasingly important role. |
