Automatic Turning Or Machining - The production of turned components on machines developed from the lathe, but designed with a system of automatic movements, has been going on for many years, and the term "automatic" has become generally accepted as applying to such machines.

Over the years considerable progress has been made in the development of such machines, but the fundamental principles of their operation have shown little change from their reliance on cams and other well known mechanical devices for producing the movements necessary.
