Types of CAMSTypes of CAMS - As mentioned earlier in article, in an automatic machine tool, the automatic working of the same is obtained by mechanical means based on earn drives. The cam shaft carries cams of various shapes; when the cam shaft rotates, the cams also rotate and actuate various operative mechanisms (cam and follower arrangement). The cam mechanism consists of a cam (C) and a follower (F). The cam mechanism provides the desired translatory motion if a suitable cam profile is selected. (a) In a disc type cam mechanism, the profile is provided on the periphery of a disc (Fig. a). (b) In a face type cam mechanism; the profile is provided on the face of the disc (Fig. b). (c) In a drum type cam mechanism, the profile is provided on a cylindrical surface (Fig. c).
Cam Mechanisms (a)Disc Type (b)Face Type(c)Drum Type The main advantage of cam mechanisms is that the velocity of the operative element is independent of the design of the driving mechanism and is controlled by the cam profile.
