Drum Type Transfer Machines - Like rotary table arrangement, this machine also has the components being transferred around a circular path to work stations radially positioned around the path at equal distances.

This machine instead of having a table has got a drum which is mounted on trunnions such that the drum rotates about a horizontal axis. The work fixtures are fastened to the periphery of the drum.

Drum type transfer machine has got the following limitations:

(i) The lower station remains idle and it is not possible to arrange a machining head to operate in the limited space under the drum.

(ii) Work at idle station will always be hanging from the fixture and therefore needs that clamping must be fool proof and efficient.

(iii) These is a limit to the size of drum which can conveniently be mounted and indexed upon trunnions.
