Broaching ToolsBroaching Tools - A broach, usually, is a tapered bar having a series of single point cutting edges projecting from the bar, with successive edges protruding farther from the axis of the bar than the previous ones. This increased projection, known as step, determines the depth of cut by each tooth (chip thickness), so that no feeding of the broaching tool is required. The frontal contour of the teeth determines the shape of the resulting machined surface. Consequently, a desired surface on the workpiece is usually obtained by a simple, linear stroke of the broach across the workpiece or the workpiece across the broach. A broach has three basic sections of cutting teeth:
he broach tapers from the first roughing tooth to the last intermediate tooth, the outside diameter of each tooth being slightly larger than the tooth that preceeds it, Usually, the diametral differences of the roughing teeth are greater than for the intermediate teeth, Ordinarily, all finishing teeth are of the same diameter. |
