The broaching of external work surfaces is known as surface broaching. Surface broaching machines are usually vertical, and hydraulically operated.

Surface broaching process is a direct alternative to milling and therefore fixtures required will be similar in principle to milling fixtures. Fixtures should be rigid quick acting with fine adjustment for positioning work relative to broach cutting edges.

The broaching surface must be rigidly mounted and the workpiece must be solidly supported as it passes the broaching section. Surface broaching is most often used for large quantities of work and quite large relatively flat surfaces.
