Types of Broaching Machines

Types of Broaching Machines - A broaching machine is designed for machining accurate internal and external surfaces of various shapes.

A broaching machine consists of:

A work holding.fixture,

A broaching tool,

A drive mechanism, and,

A suitable supporting frame

Broaching machines may be classified on the basis of:

(i) Direction of broach travel

Horizontal broaching machines

Vertical broaching machines

(ii) Method of operation

Pull broaching machines,

Push broaching machines,

Surface broaching machines,

Continuous broaching machines

(iii) Method of drive

 Hydraulic,

Pneumatic, or

Mechanical

Mechanical drive may be supplied by means of bull gear and pinion (planer-type machines), screws or chain and sprocket.

(iv)Type of operation

External (for surface broaching).

Internal (for broaching a hole).

External broaching machines are further classified as single ram or dual ram (indicating that a machine is capable of One or two broaching operations), and

Also on the basis of the flexibility of the work table (which may be fixed, receding, tilting or swinging.

(v) Special designs

They include machines such as the vertical three way machines used for pull down internal and external broaching or for push press applications.
