Vertical Broaching Machines

Vertical Broaching Machines - In a vertical broaching machine the broach is held vertically and it is pushed or pulled through the workpiece.

Broaching tool is pulled resting on the work table.

In broaching, the machine provides the primary motion (usually hydraulically powered) between the tool and work piece (motion X), and the feed f, is provided by the staggering of the teeth on the broach, each tooth removing a thin layer of material; аp being depth of cut.

A vertical broaching machine is more adaptable to high production, because the operator need not handle the broach; the machine automatically retrieves the broach before recycling. Vertical machines are more readily tooled to broach several pieces simultaneously, using multiple broaches (2, 4 or 6 broaches may be used at one time).

Vertical machines require less floor space (but more head room) than comparable horizontal machines. They are more easily automated than horizontal machines. It is often easier to supply cutting fluid to the full length of cutting section of a vertically operated broach, especially of the pull down type.

However, vertical broaching machines, because of height requirements, seldom have greater than 150 cm strokes. Almost any length of stroke is possible in horizontal machines, but they require considerable floor space.

Vertical broaching machines are further classified as

Pull up type,

Pull down type,

Push broaches machines depending on the direction of movement when the broach is cutting.
