Cutting of Herringbone GearsCutting of Herringbone Gears - The following methods are most oftenly used for cutting herring bone gears: (i) Milling (ii) Hobbing (iii) Shaping Form milling cutters and hobs can be used to cut herringbone teeth only when there is a gap wide enough to permit cutter run out between the right hand and left hand helixes. End milling can be used for cutting herringbone gears, regardless of whether the gears have center gap. Shaping is also a suitable method for cutting herringbone gears; those designed with a center (gap) slot as well as the continuous harringbone can be shaped.
