Cutting of Racks

Cutting of Racks - For cutting teeth in spur and helical racks, the following methods are used:

(i) Milling.

(ii) Shaping.

The milling cutter has the exact tooth space form and racks are cut on a standard milling machine. Manual or automatic indexing mechanisms may be employed.

Special rack cutting machines are also available for milling all sizes of racks in high volume production.

Shaping of racks involves rolling action of the operating pitch circle of the generating shaper cutter along the corresponding pitch line of the rack.
