Form Wheel GrindingForm Wheel Grinding - Form grinding consists of passing a formed wheel through a tooth space to grind to root depth. Fig. shows form wheel gear grinding, which has a very high production capacity. The left side of one tooth and the right side of the next tooth at the same time. During this process, the grinding wheel rotates about its axis. One tooth is ground at a time. When the wheel pass through a tooth space is completed the work gear is indexed to the next tooth and the procedure is repeated. Spur gears are ground with (i) a single straight with a periphery that has been formed to produce the between teeth (ii) a single wheel with several ribs that more than one tooth space during each wheel pass. Helical gears are ground with a formed, single straight wheel. The workpiece must be rotated so that the helix will be followed as the wheel passes through the tooth space. A lead bar having the same lead as the helix controls rotation during grinding. Bevel gears are form ground with a cup shaped wheel. Form grinding is also used to finish grind precut threads of worms.
