Gear BlanksGear Blanks - Most gears used in automotive and machine tools are made from blanks. Blanks for smaller gears of steel are sawed off from material bars or are rough forged. Blanks of bigger gears are manufactured by casting (cast steel, cast iron). Bigger welded gear blanks consist of the gear rim, the hub and the gear disc with and without ribs. Steel is used as material. Welded gears have less weight than cast ones, so that material is saved. Gear blanks are machined by turning on lathes.
