Gear BurnishingGear Burnishing - Gear burnishing process is used for improving the surface finish and uniformity of gears after cutting and prior to hardening. The unhardened work gear is rolled with ample application of lubricant (but no abrasive) in mesh with one or several burnishing gears with teeth that are hard, smooth and highly accurate. The pressure of the teeth of the burnishing gears on the surfaces of the teeth of the work gear has a work hardening effect and smooths out all the irregularities. Neither the tooth profile nor the pitch are corrected in burnishing. The method is applicable only for gears not requiring high accuracy, as well as for gears not subject to heat treatment processes.
