Gear Inspection - Like other component parts, gears are also checked to determine whether the production process has produced the results that were desired. Gear inspection is both functional and analytical. A functional check is quickly made to tell how the gear will operate.

The analytical check goes into more detail as to tooth spacing, depth, thickness, tooth profile etc to determine the cause of the error. Several special devices have been developed to facilitate gear inspection. Gear tooth vernier calliper is used to measure tbe thickness of gear teeth on the pitch line.

On gear checking machine, the work gear is mounted and moved in contact with a master gear. The movement of tbe latter is amplied, recorded on a moving chart and analysed for defects in work gear, if any.
