Gear Shaping MachinesGear Shaping Machines - Fig. shows a gear shaper. Work table 8 with arbor 7 for clamping gear blank 6 is mounted on base. Rail 5, at the upper part of the column, has ways for horizontal traverse of head 4 with cutter arbor 2 (this traverse is used in setting up the machine when the diameter of the cutter or gear blank is changed). All the mechanisms are powered by main drive 3 located at the top of the rail. Secured at the end of the arbor is gear shaping cutter 9 which both reciprocates and rotates about its axis in coordination with the gear blank. The blank is rapidly withdrawn horizontally at the end of each cutting stroke so that no rubbing occurs; it is returned before the next cutting stroke.
