Gears TerminologyGears Terminology - Several terms commonly used in describing gears are defined as follows.
Gear Terminology
Gear Terminology for Spur Gear
Addendum is height of tooth above pitch circle. Circular pitch is length of arc of the pitch circle between corresponding points on adjacent teeth. Dedendum is depth of a tooth space below the pitch circle. Pitch circle is a circle of radius equal to the distance from the gear axis to the pitch point. Pitch radius is radius of the pitch circle. Pitch point is the tangency point of the pitch circles of two mating gears, Pressure angle is the angle between a tooth profile and radial line at its pitch point. Tooth thickness is the thickness of the tooth measured on the pitch circle. Face of a gear tooth is that surface lying between the pitch circle and the addendum circle. Flank of a gear tooth is that surface lying between the pitch circle and the root circle. Clearance is a small distance provided so that the top of a meshing tooth will not touch the: bottom land of the other gear as it passes the line of centers. Module, M, represents the ratio of the pitch circle diameter (D) to the number of teeth (N) on the gear, M=D/N.
