Gear Tooth Rounding

Gear Tooth Rounding - Sliding gears which are shifted into mesh without stopping the machine are widely used in modern machinery (in the gearboxes of machine tools, automobiles, etc.) The ends of the teeth of such gears are rounded by special cutters on gear tooth rounding machines to avoid chipping and breakage of the teeth.

The shape of the end of tooth 1 being rounded and the path of motion of cutter 2 in the operation along with cutters 3 and 4 of end-mill type and formed bell type are shown in Fig.
