Template Method For Gear Cutting - In the template method of gear cutting, the form of the gear tooth is controlled by a template instead of a form tool. The tool used is a single point cutting tool that is guided by a template. By using a template that is several times larger than the gear tooth that is to be cut, good accuracy can be achieved.

However, the equipment is specialized. Template method is used only for cutting large teeth, which would be difficult with a formed cutter, and also for cutting teeth of large straight bevel gears. Most bevel gears are otherwise cut by various generating processes.
