Threaded Wheel Gear Grinding MethodThreaded Wheel Gear Grinding Method - Fig explains the method. It employs a grinding wheel on which a helical thread has been developed. The grinding wheel is trued to obtain a single or two start abrasive worm 303 mm in diameter, In the tooth grinding process, tbe wheel has two motions. I-rotation about its axis (cutting motion at a peripheral speed of 20-30 m/sec, and II-reciprocating motion (traverse) at a speed of 0"6 mm per work gear revolution along the gear axis (perpendicular to the plane of the figure) The work gear also has two motions IV-periodic infeed. Gear finishing takes place as a result of rotating the grinding wheel and work gear in mesh as the grinding wheel is traversed axially across the gear face (motion II referred above), Success in gear grinding by this method depends greatly on careful dressing of the wheel to the required contour and on synchronisation of the workpiece rotation with the rotation of the wheel. Special diamond wheel dressers are required.
Threaded Wheel Grinding
Spur and helical gears up to 500 mm in diameter can be ground in machines using a threaded wheel. The advantages of this method are accuracy, speed and ease of incorporating changes in tooth design. Machines also are available that crown the gear teeth during grinding. The method has certain limitations such as the grinder is complicated and sensitive, and a considerable amount of skill is required on the part of the operator.
