Boring BarBoring Bar - When the workpiece is of such a shape that its rotation is inconvenient or impracticable (e.g. an awkwardly-shaped cylinder or bed casting), the revolving boring bar or head has the preference. The boring bar serves to transmit the power from the boring machine spindle to the cutter as well as to hold it rigidly during the cutting operation. Boring bar with cutter mounted on it.
Boring bar and cutter are used for boring larger holes. The bar is supported at the (other) end.
Several cutters may be in operation together. The boring bar may be provided with two or more single point tools in order to distribute the work and also equalize the thrust of the cuts. The figure also shows the method of setting the cutters to correct height by means of a taper gauge. |
