Machines - Cutting tools are basically the same as those used on turret lathes. However, they are much larger in size. Cutting tools may be made with steel bodies of 100 x 50 mm cross section and 150300 mm long. Today most vertical boring machine cutting is done with carbide tipped tools.
Some tools have brazed on tips although the throwaway carbide tip is usually much less expensive to use and is very commonly used. Short stocky tools generally are used on vertical boring and turning mills, to resist the heavy roughing cuts, especially when turning large castings.
