Facing and Boring Operations of Horizontal Boring Machines
Drilling and Threads Operations of Horizontal Boring Machines (a) Fig. a show boring of two coaxial holes by cutters damped in boring bar 2, driven by spindle 1, and supported at the other end by bearing 3 in the end support column. In boring holes the table travels parallel to the spindle axis. (b) Fig. b shows the boring of a short hole of large diameter, with a cutter clamped in holder 2 and mounted on face plate 1. Longitudinal feed of the workpiece is affected by travel of table 3. (c) Fig, c shows a facing operation in which the table and workpiece are held stationary. The facing slide of the faceplate 1 mounts holder 2 with the clamped cutter. The facing slide feeds the cutter radially, facing the boss at the end of the hole. This operation is frequently used for machining large asymmetrical surfaces. Fig. d shows an example of simultaneous operation of facing and boring. The hole is being bored by a cutter clamped in boring bar 4 and the end of the workpiece is faced by the cutter clamped in holder 3 mounted on the facing slide 1. The workpiece and table 5 are stationary and boring bar is fed axially by boring spindle 2. Fig. e shows the drilling operation. Fig, f shows cutting of internal threads with threading, tool.
