Vertical Boring Machines - VBM - A vertical boring machine is in effect a large, sturdy lathe with its main axis vertical instead of horizontal. Machines in this category were originally designed for boring operations on large workpieces unsuitable for machining on centre lathes.

In a vertical boring machine, as in a centre lathe, the work piece rotates and the cutting, tool has a continuous linear feed motion. In other words a stationary tool operation on revolving work.
