Planer OperationsPlaner Operations - The following operations can be carried out on a planer: (i) Planning of flat horizontal surfaces. (ii) Planing vertical surfaces. (iii) Planing at an angle. (iv)Planing curved surfaces. (v) Planing a helix. (vi)Planing slots and grooves.
(vii) Gang or multiple planing. These operations are almost, similar to those performed on a shaper, with the only difference that the workpieces on which these operations are performed on a planer are, much larger in size as compared to those operated on a sharper. For doing above planer operations one has to adjust the cutting tool in a proper position with regard to that of the workpiece and then the necessary motion is to be imparted to the tool so as to cut either in the horizontal direction or vertical direction or along a curved path. How a circular surface is cut on a planer.

Gang or multiple planing ensures a uniform product and greatly reduces the time required for machining.
When a number of duplicate parts have to be planed, much time can often be saved by arranging the castings in a straight row along the platen of the planer, so that they can be planed at the same time. |
