Friction Band SawFriction Band Saw - -A friction band sawing machine may be used to produce: (i) Straight, -As compared to conventional vertical band saw, friction saw operates at greatly increased speeds (900 to 4600 m/min) and cuts through materials several times faster. -The process is virtually chipless. A special low cost dull blade contacts the work at super high speeds and produces sufficient friction to heat the material to the softening point. The strength of the material is lowered and the blade pulls or wipes the molten metal away from the sides and immediately ahead of the blade. -No coolent is used, although a tine get of compressed air may be directed upon the blade to promote the cutting action. -Depending upon certain conditions, the blades usually have a limited number of notches or teeth, although in some cases, blades with no notches are used. Notches if provided in the blade aid in removing the metal. -Almost any material, including ceramics, armor plate, stainless and tool steels may be cut by friction saw. - Metals with hard tampers have a high coefficient of friction and are heated more readily. Thus the increased hardness of the material actually enhences the cutting efficiency of this process. -Friction sawing is a very rapid method for trimming the flash from pressed sheet metal parts. Friction sawing is not recommended for cutting parts having thickness more than 25 mm.
