Tooth Set and Blade Thickness of Saw BladesTooth Set and Blade Thickness of Saw Blades --Set refers to the type of tooth construction on a saw Fig. -To provide ample clearance for the blade while cutting, the teeth are set to cut a slot or kerf slightly wider than the thickness of blade. This is done by bending certain teeth slightly to the right or left as may be seen in Fig. The wider cut permits saw to move more freely in the kerf and reduces friction and heating.
Tooth Set
-Three principal types of set are: (1) A straight set has one tooth set to the right and the next tooth to the left. This type of saw is used for cutting brass, copper and plastic. (2) A wave set consists of an alternate arrangement of several teeth set to the right and several teeth set to the left. This design is used for cutting tubes and light sheets of metal. (3) On a raker set, one straight tooth alternates with two teeth set in opposite directions. This design is used for most steel and iron cutting.
