Vertical Band Saw Machines

Vertical Band Saw Machines -Vertical band saws also known as contour machines present the blade to the workpiece vertically.

-A vertical band saw is used for
I. Straight cutting, internal or external,
II. Angular cutting, by tilting blade mechanism,
III. Contour cutting, internal or external,
IV. Slotting and slitting needed for clamping,
V. Cutting off the sprues and risers from castings,
VI. Roughing out both Interior and exterior shapes as required in tool and die-making,
VII. Filing and polishing contours of regular or irregular shape by substituting special file bands or narrow abrasive belts.

-For cutting off operation,
I. Locate the position on the work at which the cut is to be made.
II. Set the cutting speed required.
III. Lower the saw guide until it is within 6 mm of the work surface.
IV. With the saw running, bring the work piece slowly into contact with the traveling blade. Advance the work exerting a light, but steady pressure.
V. Use a coolant if recommended.

-Size of a contour saw is the distance from the blade to the column, C. This is the radius of the largest circle which can be cut and is referred to as the throat size. Throat size usually varies from 400 to 900 mm.

-Work holding is often by hand after resting the workpiece on the machine table.

Round or irregular pieces to be cut-off should be held in a vice of a fixture,

-A common speed range of the machine is from 15 to 1500 m/min. Most of the machines have a gearbox which gives two or three ranges of cutting speeds.

-Feed is frequently by hand pressure. Mechanical and hydraulic feed attachments may be added, if required.
