Slotter OperationsSlotter Operations - Operations which can be performed on the slotter are, cutting of: (i) Internal grooves or key ways, (ii) Internal gears, (iii) Recesses, (iv) Concave, circular and convex surfaces etc
Cutting a Keyway on the Slotter
For slotting a keyway, first of all scribe the centre line across the boss and mark the width of the keyway, Set the job on a pair of parallels above 10 mm to 12 mm high and clamp down, Obtain a keyway cutting tool about 10 mm wide and clamp it in the tool holder. Adjust the stroke of the ram to suit and move the ram so that the
tool just clears the table at the bottom of the stroke. Set the tool central to the marking out and commence to slot the keyway, feeding very gradually by hand. When within about 0'5 mm of depth wind away from tool, move sideways until edge of tool will slot one side of keyway to the marking out. Finish that side to the marking out using a very fine feed. Obtain a 12 mm slip gauge and finish the other side of the keyway until it is a tight fit to the gauge. Finish the bottom of the keyway. For machining straight or Oat surfaces on the slotter, place the workpiece on the parallels and clamp securely to the table. Cut should be started at one end for the side AB and the entire side machined by vertical downward stroke combined with the traverse feed. Similarly, the opposite side CD should be machined by turning the slotting tool to position 2,
Machining Flat Surfaces
For machining circular surfaces, the workpiece should be centered, with precision, concentric to the center of the table, In other words, the work must be positioned on the table so that the axis of the cylindrical surface to be machined coincides with the axis of rotation of the (rotary) worktable.
Machining a Flanged Cylindrical Casting
The circular feed screw rotates the table to produce a small arc after each cutting stroke of the tool. Rough cut to near the layout circle (marked on the work piece) leaving only enough metal for the finishing cuts.
