Repair of Vices - It is well, occasionally, to examine the condition of milling, shaping and grinding machine vices. The jaws of shaping vices are generally soft and may be faced by a vertical traverse of the head after testing it for squareness with the table.
Milling and grinding vice jaws are hardened and must be renovated by removing them from the vice and surface grinding. Unless the sliding jaw has a long bearing on the bed of the vice it will soon develop a lift at the front end caused by holding work near the top edge.

This should be rectified at the slide since vices with this fault are far from satisfactory.
