Robotics

Robotics - A Robot is any mechanical device operated automatically to perform in a seemingly human way. By this definition, a garage door opener, which automatically opens the door by remote control, is also a robot. Obviously this is not an Industrial Robot.

The Robert Institute of America (RIA) defines the industrial robot as 'A reprogrammable multi-functional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools or other specialized devices through  variable programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks'.

Some of the typical applications of industrial robots inc1ude spot welding of automobiles spray painting, machining operations, assembly, inspection, material handling etc. Robots are especially useful for working with hazardous materials or heavy objects.  Some of the benefits that can be accrued by robots are:

Cost saving through reduced labor,

Improvement in quality,

Increased capacity, and

More flexibility of low volume production equipment

In addition Robots never complain!
