Applications of HoningApplications of Honing - The primary purpose of honing usually is to remove scratches remaining from grinding etc. Fig shows various conditions left by previous operations which can be corrected by honing.
The most common honing applications relate to : (i) Removing stock from internal and external cylindrical surfaces.
Examples of internal honing are, finishing of engine cylinders, gun barrels, long tubular parts. In brief, bores of any size can be honed whether long, short, blind, tandom or with keyways. It is effective on almost any ferrous or nonferrous material in a hardened or soft condition. Numerous external surfaces that are honed are gear teeth, valve seating, races of balls and roller bearings, piston rods, piston pins, spindles, shafts etc. (ii) Providing required dimensional accuracy and surface finish. |
