Comparison of Honing and Grinding

Comparison of Honing and Grinding - Honing and grinding USI; bonded abrasives for finishing operation, whereas lapping process may use either loose or bonded abrasives.

When bonded abrasives are used, the lapping process resembles conventional grinding except that,

Lapping is done at low speeds, and

No sparking is produced.

Lapping with bonded abrasives differs from honing mainly in the type of tooling employed. Also, unlike honing, lapping is not necessarily a twomotion (i e. rotary and reciprocating) process. The difference becomes too much when lapping uses loose abrasives for finishing purposes. Honing never employs loose abrasives.

Whereas honing is a stock removal process, lapping is not. Standard practice is to provide only 0.013 mm of stock allowance for lapping and preferably less. Lapping allowance varies with the workpiece material. It is only 0.005 mm for hardened steel and 0.2 mm for cast iron. For other materials, the value is in between 0.005 and 02.
