Cutting Fluid for Honing - A cutting fluid must be used with honing. This has several purposes such as,

To clean the small chips from the stones and the workpiece,

To cool the work and the hone, and

To lubricate the cutting action.

Mineral seal oil is effective and is widely used for production honing. Buffers (such as animal oils, including tallow, lanolin and lard oils) are often added to honing fluids to minimize chatter of honing stones and thus prevent their premature disintegration. Regardless of the type of fluid used, it should be delivered to the honing stones in a constant and generous supply.
