Honing ToolHoning Tool - The tool, called a hone, consists of a cylinder or body 4, having six abrasive sticks 3, spaced around its periphery. The sticks are cemented into holders 5 each of which is joined to two radial expander pins 6, entering slots in the body. In the centre of the body is doublecone member I, by means of which the pins, holders find sticks are expanded radially to adjust the diameter of the hone and to compensate for wear.
The holders are held in pairs by springs 7 against the cone member. The hone is engaged to the spindle of the honing machine through a universal joint. The hone rotates and reciprocates in the hole of work piece 2. In modern practice virtually all honing is done with artificial stones, made by bonding together various fine artificial abrasives. Honing stones/sticks usually differ from grinding wheels in that additional materials, such as sulphur, resin or wax can be added to the bonding agent to modify the cutting action. The abrasive grains range in size from 80 to 600 grit.
