SuperfinishingSuperfinishing - Superfinishing process is a proprietary name given to a microfinishing process that produces a controlled surface condition on parts which is unobtainable by any other method. Superfinishing is a fine honing operation. Superfinishing (i) achieves higher surface finish on components, (ii) removes chatter marks, (iii) removes fragmented or smear metal from the surface of a dimensionally finished part (formed by a previous operation, notably turning or grinding, but possibly by honing or lapping), thus leaving a base of solid crystalline metal. (iv) superfinishing produces the ultimate in the refinement of metal surfaces, Superfinished parts are bright and reflective with an undisturbed crystalline structure. Superfinishing is an abrading process. It is essentially a finishing process. Stock removal in the superfinishing process is of the order of 0.005 to 0.025 mm on diameter. Surface finish obtained is of the order of 0.05 to 0.2 pm. Superfinishing cannot correct the geometrical shape of surfaces, but can impart a high degree of geometric accuracy to the work piece. Superfinishing is used for internal as well as external surfaces. Superfinishing is applied to both cylindrical and plane surfaces. Superfinishing is also used to produce surfaces having a definite crosshatch pattern to aid in lubrication. |
