Vibratory Finishing ProcessVibratory Finishing Process - Vibratory finishing is a newer method of mass finishing. The machines required are costly but they do jobs many times faster than barrel finishing. The process has replaced barrel finishing in many shops. The media and compound used are the same as used in barrel finishing. The vibrating barrel may be rectangular. The barrel is loaded with parts, media and compound. As the barrel is vibrated, the mass of media, parts and compound usually move in an elliptical path. The media (abrasive) is in constant motion against the work and this action removes burrs, rounds, corners, finishes bores and other concealed surfaces or accomplishes the other purposes of loose grain abrasives. The frequency and amplitude of vibrations can be changed to produce fast cuts (high frequency, high amplitude) or with slower or smaller motions, a high lustre can be obtained. In contrast to barrel finishing which produces a relatively, long scratch pattern, the vibratory finishing produces a short choppy pattern. Unlike barrel finishing, a work piece picked up and examined at any time in vibratory finishing as the vibrating barrel is open at the top.
