Machines - A horizontal rod (H) with a dial gauge (G) attached at a radius of about 300 mm is fixed to the spindle (S). The anvil of the dial gauge bears on the base plate (P). By rotating the spindle.

(i) the dial gauge readings are taken in two positions as shown in Fig. and
(ii) two more readings are taken in the positions at right angles to those shown in Fig
The difference of two readings taken at
(i) gives the error in squareness of the spindle axis with table. The permissible error is 0.08 mm per 300 mm. When readings are taken at
(ii) position, the permissible error is 0.05/300 mm.
