Testing the Level of the Lathe BedTesting the Level of the Lathe Bed - The level of the lathe bed can be tested in longitudinal and transverse directions using a precision spirit level. The saddle is kept approximately in the centre of the bed support feet. A precision level is placed at A A position to indicate the level in the longitudinal direction. It is then traversed along the length of the bed and readings at various places are noted down. For level test in the transverse direction (B B), the spirit level is kept on a bridge pieces (having flat base) to span the front and rear guideways and the level readings are taken. The readings in transverse direction reveal any twist or wind in the bed, which should not be tolerated. The error in level may be corrected by setting wedges or shims at suitable points under the support feet or pads of the machine tool. The permissible error in level for lathe, radial drilling machine and milling machine in both longitudinal and transverse directions per 1000 mm are, (0.02, ± 0.02), (0.1, 0.1) and (± 0.04, ± 0.04) mm respectively.
