Advantages and Disadvantages of Rolling the ThreadAdvantages and Disadvantages of Rolling the Thread - Rolling has long been conceded to be the fastest method of producing screw threads. Threads are completely formed in one pass of the dies. Not only is thread rolling a very economical method, the threads produced also are excellent as to form, surface finish and strength. The cold working contributes to increased strength, particularly at the critical root areas. There is less likelihood of scratches and tears that can result from machining and which can act as stress raisers. Large number of threads are rolled on thin, tubular products. In this case external and internal rolls are used. The threads on electric lamp bases and sockets are examples of this type of thread. Thread rolling, however, is not economical for limited production runs, except for special applications on hand feed machines. A practical workpiece hardness limit is Rockwell C40.
