Plunge Grinding |

Plunge GrindingPlunge Grinding - This employs a multi rib bed wheel, the profile being generated either by crush dressing or by diamond roll dressing. The workpiece is rotated a little over one revolution (1 1/4 to 1 1/2 rev) and is traversed one pitch, during which time the wheel is plunged into the full depth of the thread being formed. Plunge grinding is used mostly for short lengths of thread on the ends of shafts. The plunge cut method promotes uniform wheel wear, but with the passover method the first few ribs of the wheel remove most of the material and are therefore subjected to more rapid wear than is the following portion of the wheel. In this method, to avoid interference, the plane of the wheel is set to the helix angle of the thread. Single rib wheel thread grinding under precision conditions, is now used extensively for finishing the threads on recirculating ball screws used on numerical control machines and other applications where a lead screw and nut were previously employed. |
