Thread Rolling Using Rotary Planetary Machines

Thread Rolling Using Rotary Planetary Machines - They use dies as illustrated in. The starting end of the segmented die is set so that the segment and rotary die will just contact the blank. The finishing end of the segment die is set closer to the axis of the rotary die so that the thread is fully formed when the blank rolls past the finish end of the segment die.

One or several blanks may be rolled in this manner at one time, depending upon the setup. There is no appreciable axial movement of the blank during rolling. (5) Most of the threads produced today are rolled on special thread rolling machines or by using special attachments on automatic screw machines and automatic lathes.

A typical thread rolling machine is illustrated in Fig. Machines of this kind use flat and cylindrical dies, while automatic screw machines use only cylindrical dies. In most instances, the entire length of thread is formed by an infeed method without endwise feeding of the blanks or dies.

Through feeding of the blanks is used on cylindrical die machines for continuous threading of long bars or for threading short, headless parts.Figure shows the vertical model of a thread rolling machine. It utilizes a 3 die principle of self centering action on the work. This machine setup is fast and can be operated manually for job shop operations.
