Thread Rolling |

Thread RollingThread Rolling - Today, virtually all threads made in large quantities are made by rolling. This is a cold forming operation in which the threads are formed by rolling a thread blank between hardened dies that cause the metal to flow radially into the desired shape. Because no chips are formed, no metal is removed and less is required, with consequent saving, and the cold working results in increased strength and a very smooth and wear resistant surface. In addition, the process is almost unbelievably fast; the action on an actual machine cannot be observed without slowing the machine or using a stroboscopic light. On large threads, hot rolling occasionally is used.
