Milling Machines for Tool and Die Makers

Milling Machines for Tool and Die Makers - To provide the versatility and movements necessary for undertaking the widest possible range of work, special milling machines have been designed. The head of the machine which accommodates the vertical spindle is carried on a rectangular overarm with, in and out movements on its slides, and the base of this overarm can be swivelled through 180'.

The spindle head itself is mounted at the front of the overarm and can be swung to 45' on either side of the vertical, moved by worm and gear. The 1.5 kW motor is mounted on the top and drives the spindle by an infinitely variable speed belt arrangement in two ranges. The lower range (with back gear) give 80-500 rev/min and the high range covers 500-3100 rev/min. A tachometer is incorporated in the centre of the hand wheel for speed selection.

Toolmaster Milling Machine in its Basic Form

In its basic form all the movements of the machine are hand operated, and the machine is capable of being used for milling, drilling, boring and tapping operations. The quill of the spindle with 125 mm of travel is actuated by a lever for coarse feeding and by a micrometric hand wheel for fine work. Depth stops are incorporated for regulating its movement. The table lead screw is provided with a backlash eliminator.

In order to increase the versatility of the machine for tool and die-sinking work, there is no limit to the features and accessories that can be added to the basic machine, or incorporated in the design of machines of which it forms the basic parent. Among the 'extras' and variations are the following:

(a) power feed to table, saddle and quill;

Use of Slotting Attachment

(a) Use Of Slotting Attachment

(b) slotting attachment, which fits to the rear of the overarm

Use of Universal Milling Attachment

(b )Use of Universal Milling Attachment

(c) arbor and driving arrangement to convert to horizontal milling;
(d) right angle and universal milling attachments
(e) circular table and dividing head;
(f) Truetrace and Synchrotrace adaptations to convert the machine with a tracer stylus with hydraulic and electrical control for semi or fully automatic die sinking work similar to that described for the machine.

The use of these attachments, some of which can be fitted without disturbing the set up of the work, enhances the value of the machine in terms of both the accuracy and the economy of its application.
