Cutting FluidsCutting Fluids - In addition to the proper cutting speed, feed and depth of cut careful attention should also be given to the selection and use of proper cutting fluids. Cutting fluids (i) Prolong tool life, (ii) Increase rate of metal removal, (iii) Aid in producing a finer finish, (iv)Enable machining to close tolerances, (v) reduce thermal distortion of workpiece. The term cutting fluid includes: (i) Straight cutting oils, (ii) Water soluble cutting oils, and (iii) Chemical or synthetic cutting fluids, which are not oils. With almost 90% of machine tools an oil and water emulsion is used. Main functions of cutting fluids (i) To cool cutting tool and work, (ii) To lubricate the face of the tool and the chip, (iii) To provide flushing action for chip removal, (iv) To prevent rusting of the machine and the workpiece.
