Cutting Speed, Feed and Depth of Cut

Cutting Speed, Feed and Depth of Cut - Cutting speed is the most important factor in tool life. Excessive speed can bum a cutter. Too slow a speed is of course, an expensive way to do business. Two distinct criteria can be used in choosing the cutting speed for a machining operation: minimum production cost and minimum production time.

Feed rate When a finishing cut is to be taken, the appropriate feed will be that which will give an acceptable surface finish. In this case the choice of feed is in the hands of the designer who will have specified the surface finish requirements.

Depth of cut determines the depth of material removed from the workpiece in a single point cutting tool operation.
