Single Pass, Multi Pass and Multistage MachiningSingle Pass, Multi Pass and Multistage Machining - If the machining operation is completed by passing the cutter (or cutting tool) only once ( one time) over the workpiece it is classified as single pass machining. Suppose a casting is to be machined, and the full machining margin of 4 mm given on that is removed in one go on a planning machine, it will be called single pass machining. On the other hand, if two passes are employed one for the roughing cut and the other for the finishing cut, with different cutting speeds, feeds and depths of cut, it will be known as double pass machining. A multipass machining makes use of more than two passes, including both roughing and finishing cuts.
Economics of metal cutting is influenced depending upon the fact that whether a single pass or multipass machining operation is selected. The multistage machining system (differs from multipass machining because it) is a flow type process comprising of N production stages arranged sequentially following the order of production technology. At each production stage, a single machine tool is operated by one operator. The cycle time of the system is given by the maximum value among the N total production times at N production stages. |
