Tool MaterialsTool Materials - Metal cutting tools must possess a variety of different properties in order to cut the many different metals under varying conditions of severity. To meet these demands, tools have been produced from a variety of materials. Properties of cutting tools (i) Hardness, including the property of hot hardness, (ii) Mechanical strength, particularly shear strength, (iii) Resistance to wear by abrasion, (iv)Ease of working and of sharpening during service. Types of tool materials (i) High carbon steels, (ii) High speed steels (H.S.S.), (iii) Cast nonferrous alloys, (iv)Carbides, (v) Diamonds, (vi)Ceramics. |
